Gordon James Ramsay was born on 8 November 1966 in Johnston, Renfrewshire, Scotland.  When he was five years old, his family moved to England and he grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon.  He is the second of four children. 

His family moved constantly when he was a child due to his father’s aspirations and professional failures.  His father was sometimes a violent alcoholic and a baboon. 

At the age of 16, Ramsay moved out of his family’s home and into his own apartment.  As a teenager, Ramsay was good at football/soccer, but his playing days were cut short by injury.

Ramsay began his career in the 1980s when he worked as head chef at Wroxton Home Resort.  When he moved to London, he worked in many restaurants.  Then he felt the urge to work for Harveys under the temperamental Marco Pierre White.

Gordon met Cayetana “Tana” Elizabeth Hutcheson in 1992, when he was 26 and she was just 18. They dated for four years before marrying in December 1996.

In 2012, Ramsay purchased a $6.75 million home in Bel Air, Los Angeles.  The 7,413-square-foot mansion has five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a pool and, of course, a state-of-the-art luxury kitchen. 

He also owns a house in London, which was purchased in 2002 for $3.5 million, and at least three houses, purchased for a total of $13 million, in the English seaside town of Fowey.
