Mackenzie Scott Tuttle was born in April 1970 in San Francisco, California, and grew up in Marin County, across from the Golden Gate Bridge.  She grew up in her family home in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood with her father and mother.

Her father ran an investment consulting firm and her mother was a homemaker.  Mackenzie attended Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut during her high school years.

Her father was the subject of an SEC investigation into his financial firm, and he ended up filing for bankruptcy to avoid prosecution.  Her parents then moved to Florida and her father failed in his attempt to open another financial firm.

After the SEC concluded its investigation, it banned Mackenzie’s father from doing business in the financial sector. After high school, McKenzie enrolled at Princeton University to study English.

She graduated from Princeton University in 1992, studying English under renowned author Toni Morrison.

Mackenzie Scott was born in San Francisco, California on April 7, 1970.  She attended the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut before earning a BA in English from Princeton University in 1992.  She studied under and was an assistant to renowned author Toni Morrison.

Scott began working as a research associate at D.E.  Show in New York in 1992.  There she met Jeff Bezos and they married in 1993.  She moved to New York shortly after taking a job at a hedge fund, although her passion was to become a writer. 

While working at a hedge fund as an administrative assistant, she met a colleague, Jeff Bezos, who was a senior vice president.  Their courtship was very short—only three months later they were engaged.  They got married in 1993.

According to, Scott, who was married to Bezos for 25 years, ended their marriage with Bezos’ 25% stake in Amazon, equivalent to a 4% stake in the online giant.  Full ownership of the 2.5-acre estate was granted to Scott in the marriage settlement.

The property, which consists of two combined lots, was acquired in separate deals 10 years apart, one in 2007 and the other in 2017.  The total value of the Bezos amounted to 37 million dollars. 

The component that made up the previous transaction was previously owned by Rick Guerin, an investor and former business partner of Warren Buffett.  According to Dirt, he built the house in the 90s and sold it to Bezos in the mid-2000s.

After 25 years of marriage, Scott and Bezos separated amicably.  The couple has three sons and a daughter. 

At the time of the divorce, his net worth was $136 billion, while her net worth was approximately $35.6 billion. The couple agreed to let Jeff retain the voting rights in the stock he transferred to her.
