A Brief History of Farragut Career Academy Chicago

Farragut School first opened its doors as a primary school in the fourth month of September 1894. Its 16 rooms, located on Spaulding Avenue near 23rd Street in the South Lawndale area, were planned to hold just 900 kids.

The Chicago Board of Education named the school after Civil War naval hero Admiral David Glasgow Farragut.

On the first day of operation, the school enrolled around 500 children assigned to grades one through four. The 500 kids, among the 175,000 students enrolled in Chicago that year, witnessed a 15% rise in student enrollment.

By the early twentieth century, Chicago’s Southwest side had grown in population. The resulting consequence was congestion in Farragut, which became an issue.

There was a severe need to address this issue of overcrowding. Due to this, the Chicago Board of Education granted a $150,000 grant to build a sixteen-room extension and assembly hall for Farragut.

The then-principal of Farragut, Henry C. Cox, who took over from Mary Baker in 1904, made efforts to establish a high school extension.

Henry C. Cox stated that a shortage of lodging was the biggest reason Farragut did not complete their high school education.

On September 7, 1909, with Frank L. Morse as Principal, this expansion of structures opened the doors of Farragut as a high school. The original building is still in use as an elementary school.

Following WWII, the school demographics changed as more African-Americans moved into the neighboring areas, which European immigrants and Jews had previously occupied.

The student population and teaching staff became more African-American. In 1950, the community around Farragut was 91.2% white and 8.6% black; by 1960, it was 64.4% black and 35.3% white.

Due to the lack of a senior high school in North Lawndale, many black students attended Farragut. Farragut’s student body was roughly 90% black by 1968, and the school was overcrowded since North Lawndale also flowed into it.
