Terry Brands was born with his twin brother Tom on April 9, 1968, in Omaha, Nebraska, United States.
They attended Sheldon High School in Sacramento, California, where they started their rise to wrestling fame.
Terry Brands proceeded to the University of Lowa, earning a bachelor of science degree in Human Development in 1992.
Terry Brands later became the American Olympic wrestler who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics after failing to win the semi-final match against the Iranian wrestler Alireza Dabir.

Tom and Terry Brands started wrestling in fifth grade. Initially, the two brothers never had the dream of wrestling. In fact, because of their height, they were told they were too short to play basketball and were asked to wrestle instead.
Later, Terry proceeded to Sheldon High School, where he won two state championships and one runner-up finish. Terry had a high school record of 110-10, including a 34-0 record in 1986.
The next level of Brands’ wrestling career was at the University of Lowa, where he won NCAA titles in 1990 and 1992, weighing 126 pounds.
In 1993 and 1995, Terry won a two-time world freestyle championship at 58 kg. And he really got lots of accolades for it.
He was named 1993 USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year and 1993 John Smith Freestyle Wrestler of the Year. And also won the 1993 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year.
Terry faced some setbacks making the U.S. Olympic 1996 Team and competing at the 1997 and 1999 U.S. World Teams.

Later, he served as an assistant coach at Montana State-Northern from 2001 to 2002. Terry became the head wrestling coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2002, a position he held till 2005.
